There are varied opinions on this deal, and to me it does seem like a bad idea. We will just be wasting time integrating two big giants. It will be a sheer waste of resources.
A BIG "NO". There are so many products from msft and yhoo that compete with each other. Even if we decide to keep one, we are essentially wasting the efforts that were used to build the other one. If we plan to integrate the two then again it won't be an easy task.
Well, I think it makes perfect business sense knowing what I know. You would be amazed to know how similar the technical base is between
Yahoo and MS. Agreed, there is some wastage when merging giants but look at the numbers and it is revealed that the merger more than pays for itself within a few quarters.
The thing I dont get is: every organization does a lot of small aquisitions and integrate them well - there is no doubt about that. Given that big organizations like Yahoo are nothing but a collection of small organizations, I would assume that the super smart people at both Yahoo and MS would have figured out how divide and conquer works!
Have given due credit to both Yahoo and MS
This entry reflects my personal opinion on the issue

I am completely with you. I guess lot of us are not looking at the bigger picture. Smart people behind Yahoo and Microsoft are not fools who cant foresee small issues like integration.
From Business perspective , Microsoft can leverage big time from Yahoo's user base. Overall it seems to be a win-win for both Microsoft and Yahoo.
Buying small, innovative companies that have developed something that the corporation hasn't been able to -- seems like a good approach. Google probably is minting money using this approach but the equation doesn't remain the same if the company(to be acquired) is huge as Yahoo no matter how many techniques like divide n conquer you use.
You are forgetting that Yahoo and Microsoft are no ordinary stones. Together they have the ability to become a Diamond. It might be a problem initially but I personally feel together they will wipe off Google.
Acquisitions are good but when two leaders merge then they will always have issues related to "power". In this case Yahoo will never like to lose its identity and independence even if it plans to merge(get acquired) with Microsoft
How does combining a failing company (Yahoo) and a failed division of Microsoft (MSN) produce a successful division of Microsoft?
The one thing that the two companies have in common is the very thing that will make them both fail at this Web thing. They both believe that it's about centralization. The companies are built around that philosophy. Yahoo tried to create a central place where people would go on the Internet, which worked in the early wild-west days of the web -- Yahoo was the best thing out there for awhile -- and it's what caused Yahoo to slide as the Web became more decentralized. Yahoo's centralized services are no longer as good as their decentralized competitors.
For long term success, the merger is a good idea- it will put presuure on Google- specially in areas other than search. But depends on how well the integration is executed.
Most people are not looking at the bigger picture. I feel this merger will help Microsoft + Yahoo become the internet LEADER. Intregration and all are very very petty issues.

Microsoft believes that if you tie two stones together, they will float on water. :-)

Its sad to see how two big giants have to merge to fight one SINGLE company (Internet King) Google :(

Is it just me who thinks that Microsoft will also lay of some of the employees if this deal goes through ?
Don't worry. Microsoft will never do that :). I am sure our jobs are safe.
I can see this in Headlines soon " Now its Microsoft laying off 1000s of its employees"
Its so funny. One of my friends just left Microsoft and joined Yahoo. He will be back with Microsoft if this acquisition happens.

I don't know if its good bet for Yahoo but surely its a great bet for us. Microsoft will come out on to the Top and Yahoo will get shafted.
It might be a great bet for Microsoft but not at a price more than 42.6 billion dollars.
Its great to see we (the employees) are asked for our opinion. I don't think its not a good idea at all from employees point of view.

An email from Microsoft to its employees
